Daisy's Day in the Hospital Learning About Type 1 Diabetes
Hey friends Dr. Oscar buzzing in to share with you the day my friend Daisy walked into my clinic and the day she was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.
We left off with Daisy in her kitchen, she drank a whole gallon of milk and was still thirsty and didn’t feel well. Daisy’s father Albert and Abby called their veterinarian Dr. Oscar and made an appointment for Daisy to be seen. Dr. Oscar asks her parents and Daisy if she had any of these common symptoms of type 1 diabetes. He asked:
If she had been very thirsty even after drinking lots of water
Was she frequently urinating or even wetting the bed
If Daisy was extremely hungry
If she had lost any unexplained weight
If she was very tired and weak
And even if she was irritable or having mood swings
Dr. Oscar gave Daisy a tuna treat and told her parents he needed to run some tests, he then ran some blood tests. He also pricked Daisy’s finger which felt like a little poke on a thorn from a rose and put a little test strip into a machine which is called a blood glucose meter. He confirmed that Daisy’s blood glucose level was 732. Albert and Abby started crying, Dr. Oscar explained to them that Daisy was type 1 diabetic and that it’s not curable but it’s treatable.
