If you have dealt with hypoglycemia, you know what I’m talking about when you make 3 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, eat 10 Oreos, have a big glass of juice and heck why not through in some crackers as well. You’re not alone but as we all know this is not how we should treat a low blood sugar. First we’ll discuss some of the symptoms of a low blood sugar:

  1. You may become very irritable

  2. You may be very shaky and even feel cold

  3. Are you getting confused easily?

  4. Do you have blurred vision or a headache?

  5. You may get very hungry

  6. Are you sweaty and have clammy skin?

  7. When you get up you may get very dizzy and lightheaded

Now that you’re aware of the symptoms, here’s how you should treat your low blood sugar. If you feel any of these symptoms:

  1. You should first check your blood sugar on your meter and if it’s under 70 go to step 2

  2. Eat or drink 15 carbs. Many of these items are 15 carbs: an apple, a 8 oz glass of juice or milk, a piece of bread with peanut butter.

  3. After eating, wait 15 minutes if you sugar is still under 70, repeat steps 2 and 3 until your blood sugar is over 70.

The next time your blood sugar is low and your grabbing for the whole bag of cookies try and remember these few steps that can help your blood sugar not skyrocket.
