Dr. Oscar's Guide to Pool Parties with Type 1 Diabetes
Hey friends Dr. Oscar buzzing in to share with you some helpful tips to remember when you’re getting ready for your summer pool parties.
Here’s a list of some tips that have helped me stay safe during the summer months:
Always have a cold insulated bag for your insulin or insulin pump.
You should carry extra snacks or a juice with you, you never know when you’re going to need it with the extra physical activities.
Every hour or if you’re feeling a low blood sugar or a high blood sugar you should take your blood sugar and take insulin accordingly.
This should be a given, to carry extra supplies even if you wear an insulin pump you should have insulin syringes and extra insulin in case your pump gets to warm. If you do wear an insulin pump you should have extra pump supplies.
I always have extra tape to put around my pump site if I’m going to be in the water or sweating a lot. If you wear a CGM I try and put skin tag on the sticky part of the site as well.
This is hopefully a given even if you’re not diabetic, wear sun screen if you’re going to be out in the sun and keep yourself hydrated by drinking lots of water not soda pop or juice.
